I’m amazed at how many Americans don’t know their own family heritage any further back than their grandparents. For many years, I was one of them. I would casually tell people, â€Å"My family never really talked much about our family tree, because we were afraid we’d find horse thieves hanging from the branches.† But, bad or good, I always wondered about my roots. I’m not alone. Millions of Americans have the same questions. So, what happened? Were so many of our families separated in the westward expansion that we lost our connections to the past? Were families in such crisis during the World Wars or the Great Depression that mere survival was their only focus? Was there a generation that just wanted to forget the past? Was it the â€Å"live for today† mentality of the ‘60s that deemed it â€Å"old fashioned† to have any roots or history? It was probably a combination of many factors, but the affect of the loss of our personal histories has been far-reaching. Without fail, when someone discovers the stories in their own family tree, they become empowered and inspired. I know this from personal experience, because eight years ago, someone helped me discover my lost family legacies, and it changed me forever. I found stories of great sacrifice, courage, conviction, service, struggle, conflict, diversity and triumph. Is Technology A Solution Or A Danger To Our Health And Society? Over the last few years of my life, technology evolved in an abrupt manner. Science and its inventions over the centuries have made life easier and enjoyable. The future of genetics, neuroscience, and biotechnology bear the potential to transform our world for the better. Any technology that offers benefits will usually come with risks as well. In order to make wise decisions about using a technology, we must understand its potential impacts well enough to decide whether the risks are acceptably low. Here I think that we have become so dependent on technology so we can barely function without it. Obsessions with looking younger and beautiful through plastic surgery have taken hold in this society. But in what we dont think is that we are meddling up with nature, and we believe no consequences will be paid. As curious creatures we keep pushing the limits of one form, of technology or another or another. We keep pushing its boundaries and its capacity to keep track of it. Before I co uld point out the impacts of technology in our health and society, weather solution or danger, I needed to know what technological advances were already out of control. Hitting a Baseball Free Essays

It has been a proven fact that hitting a baseball is one of the toughest things to accomplish in sports. In the major leagues if you fail 7 out of 10 times you are still considered to be an incredibly good hitter. That statistic shows how challenging it is even for Athletes at the professional level to produce a perfect swing. In this essay I will show how hitting a baseball develops through 3 different stages of learning. When someone is first starting off usually around the ages of 7 to 9 , they do not understand that the way a bat is held effects the outcome of the swing. In the beginning process many tend to place the bat in their palm and grip it extremely tight, without aligning their knuckles. They do not realize that holding the bat this way will reduce the range of motion in the swing, causing slower bat speed. Another key component to hitting a baseball is the hitter’s stance. In the beginning stage many crowd the plate, with their toes pretty much touching the corner of the tip of the plate. The legs are extremely bent and the toes are pointing in two different directions. The hands are then placed right next to the ear with both elbows facing up. The hitters back is usually arched at the top, with their shoulders kinds of pushing in to the neck. As the ball is pitched the hitter does not take a step towards the pitch, instead they keep their feet planted on their heels. When the ball is getting closer they begin their swing by dropping the back elbow and lifting the front one up. As the bat begins to cross the plate the head begins to turn away from the ball, because they are using no hip action. The bat is stopped in front of their body, creating no follow through. There may be little or no contact at this point. As a hitter progresses around the middle school stage, one thing they begin to change is the way they grip the bat. Now that they are a little more informed they begin to align the knuckles and place the bat on the fingers instead of on the palm. The hitter now has more flexion in the wrist along them to better their chances of hitting the ball. The stance of the batter is now gradually changing as well. The batter is now able to get in a position to where they can feel a little more comfortable. The knees are just are just slightly bent still allowing them to have some mobility. The toes are both facing in the same direction but are still planted on their heels. The elbows are now facing down instead of up, and the hands are up just above the shoulders and away from the ears. The back is no longer arched and the hitter is now at a stance where they are not as stiff as they once were. As the pitch comes the hitter now takes a step forward to generate some force, and prepare for his swing to begin. As the pitch is coming the hitter now keeps his eyes on the ball as it is coming in and extends hit arms out toward the baseball but slightly drops the barrel of the bat because of this, the hitter might have a tendency to pop the ball up instead of hitting a solid line drive. At this point the swing has now gotten better but still it has not generated bat speed to its full potential. Once the collegiate level is reached the batter now understands all the key fundamentals to hitting a baseball. With many years of practice and execution the hitter’s swing is now at its perfect state making it much easier to create contact and power. At this point the hitter no longer has any difficulty with the grip of the bat, or stance. Their feet are at shoulder width length allowing them to be at their most powerful position. The hitter is on the balls of his or her feet and is no longer on the heels. As the pitch is coming the hitter shifts his weight from the front leg to the back leg. The hitter is creating negative force by taking a step back, then going forward once again. At this point, weight should be about 70 percent on the back leg, 30 percent on the front leg. This allows the hitter to stay on the back leg to generate the most amount of power possible as they are swinging. While this is happening the hitter must also shift his hand back to generate more power in the upper body as well. The next step is the key essential where many beginners go wrong when trying to hit a baseball. Many believe that the hands trigger the swing, but this is untrue. It is the explosion of the hip that creates the swing. The hips start to open and allow the hands to explode through the hitting zone at a much higher rate of speed than if the hands triggered first and were still inhibited by the body. This has been proven by some of the most respected hitting authorities in the world by using high speed motion detection software to analyze a hitter’s swing. Once the hips have started to open, the hands shoot through the zone. The hitter drives the nob of the bat to the ball, and keeps the bat through the zone as long as possible. This makes it easier to hit the pitch no matter where it is thrown. Once the bat has made contact the hips naturally finish their rotation as the hands leave the hitting zone and follow through. The AP Chemistry exam is 3 hours and 15 minutes long and has two sections:multiple-choice (90 minutes long) and free-response (105 minutes long).There are 60 multiple-choice questions andseven free-response questions. The free-response section contains three long response (worth 10 points each) and four short response (worth four points each) questions.You're allowed to use a calculator on the free response section, but you can't use one for multiple-choice. Time management is important on the AP Chemistry exam because you can easily get caught up in difficult problems.Try not to spend more than a minute on each multiple-choice question during your first pass through the section so that you don’t miss any questions at the end that you could have answered.You’ll have time to go back and revisit the ones you skipped if you pace yourself.For the free-response questions, you should limit your time to around 5-10 minutes for short response questions and 15-20 minutes for long response questions. What Do AP Chemistry Questions Look Like? Multiple-Choice Sample Question Multiple-choice AP Chemistry questions are often chunked together. In other words, several questions will pertain to a single experiment or dataset.Here’s an example: In this case, you’re asked why a certain outcome resulted from an experiment.You need to know why the pressure in the container would increase based on the changes that occurred.A and B suggest that the increase in pressure has to do with intermolecular attractions either decreasing or increasing in the flask.These choices are incorrect because the intermolecular attractions between these molecules wouldn’t be significant enough to make a difference in the pressure of the container. For Choice C, the first part is correct: the number of molecules has increased with the decomposition of PCl5.It also makes sense that this would result in a higher frequency of collisions with the walls of the container.This answer is looking pretty good. Choice D is wrong because there’s no reason to expect that the molecules have increased in speed inside the container during the reaction. Since we ruled out all the other options, Choice C is the correct answer! Short Response Sample Question For part A, you needed to draw out the interactions between the ions and water molecules in the solution.Three points were awarded for: A representation of at least one Li+ ion and one Cl- ion clearly separated and labeled correctly Each ion surrounded by at least two water molecules Water molecules must be oriented correctly (oxygen end is closer to the lithium ion, and hydrogen end is closer to the chloride ion) Part b was worth one point for identifying the chemical species and providing justification.The species produced at the cathode would be H2(g) and OH-(aq) (you could say either one of these for the point).The hydrogen atoms in water are reduced to H2 at the cathode because this reaction has a lower magnitude reduction potential than that of the reduction of lithium ions to Li (-0.83 vs. -3.05). There’s stoichiometry, chemical bonds, intermolecular forces, Lewis diagrams, and thermodynamics!It’s testing whether you can apply a bunch of disparate skills that you’ve learned throughout the year to the scenario presented on the test. Let’s look at part a: For part i of part a, we need to calculate the number of moles of ethene that are produced in the experiment and measured in the gas collection tube. How to Review for AP Chemistry Your AP Chemistry review should revolve around detecting your areas of weakness and practicing relevant problems.Here are the steps you might go through: Step 1: Take and Score a Practice Test The first thing you should do is take a full practice test to assess how well you know the material.It’s more efficient just to study the concepts that you’re still shaky on rather than going back through all your notes for the course.Make sure you take the test with the same time constraints as the real exam, and don’t use a calculator on the multiple-choice questions. You should also circle any questions where you feel even a little unsure of the correct answer.You need to go over those concepts even if you end up getting the question right so you can be as comfortable as possible with all the content. When you’re done with the test, you can score it and set a goal for how much you want to improve. Step 2: Categorize Your Mistakes (and Any Other Questions That You Were Unsure About) Now that you’ve scored your test, go through your mistakes and lucky guesses, and sort them by topic area.This is the best way to get a clear picture of where you have the most significant issues with the content.Your list of mistakes will inform the rest of your review.I’d also recommend redoing problems that you missed to see if you can get to the correct answer. Step 3: Review Relevant Content If there was any essential background information on the test that you forgot, start by reviewing that content.The information that you learned in the first couple months of the course serves as a foundation for the rest of the class.After you feel confident with the basics, you can move onto studying higher-level topics. You might review your notes on how to solve certain types of problems or look back at the information in your textbook.You can also use an AP review book to study.Sometimes this is a better option because review books are specifically tailored to the test. Step 4: Do Practice Problems Reviewing content isn’t enough in chemistry. You need to know how to apply your knowledge to unfamiliar experimental scenarios on the test.Spend some time doing practice problems that pertain to each of your areas of weakness until you feel more comfortable with the subject matter. Step 5: Take Another Practice Test to See If You’ve Improved After you finish doing practice problems, try out your new skills on another practice test. You can score the new test and see whether you’re satisfied with your new (and hopefully improved) scores.You always have the option of repeating this process if there’s still room for growth.If you don’t see much improvement, you may have to go back and reevaluate your study methods. If there are some concepts that you’re having a really hard time wrapping your head around, I’d encourage you to ask your teacher or one of your classmates to help you understand the material better.Sometimes, if you can’t figure something out yourself, an alternative explanation is what you need for it to click.
